Analysis Notes

Look for whether the same specialties dominate both beds and consultants. Divergence can signal staffing or capacity mismatches. Regional clusters of the same top specialties may reflect legacy service planning or referral patterns that persisted after the 1974 reorganisation.

What to watch for

  • Areas where beds concentrate in a specialty without a matching consultant profile.
  • Consistent “Top 5” overlap across neighbouring AHAs (possible spillovers or shared services).
