Reading the Chart

Compare whether specialties with higher headcount in an AHA align with its major inpatient workloads. Mismatches between consultant distribution and bed mix can indicate cross-AHA referrals, legacy centralisation, or gaps in local capacity.

Key Checks

• Specialties that dominate consultant numbers but not beds (and vice versa).
• Neighbouring AHAs with similar consultant profiles—potential shared service footprints.
• Specialties consistently low across multiple AHAs (possible regional centralisation).

Methods

Counts reflect consultants assigned by specialty at the AHA level in the relevant year(s). Where specialties were reclassified historically, series are harmonised to the common taxonomy used elsewhere in the project for comparability.
